La Forêt Domaniale de Châtellerault

Back

At the gates of the town of Châtellerault, the 530-hectare national forest extends over the communes of Châtellerault and Naintré and is managed by the National Forestry Office (ONF).

It has a large proportion of pedunculate oaks, today in poor health or even dying because they are poorly resistant to climate change. The new forest management therefore provides for its replacement by sessile oaks (a variety of oak better adapted to withstand drought) and pines.

The ONF, with a concern for sustainable forest management, also seeks to maintain a forest rich in biodiversity by conserving old dead wood, restoring ponds and maintaining islands of aging trees.
Welcoming the public is also an important issue given the proximity of the forest to the city: walking and hiking paths, tables, etc.
