Site/monument

Eglise Saint-Hilaire du Martray

This former church of the Carmelite convent, fortified during the 15th and 16th centuries, constitutes a remarkable testimony to the end of the Gothic era in the Poitou region, particularly through its southern portal. The single nave ends with a flat apse decorated with a large window with flamboyant motifs. A 19th century stained glass window, illustrating the resurrection according to a work by Raphael, adds to the splendor of the building. The restoration of this monument has revealed the finesse of the sculpted decoration, comparable to lace.

Inside, be sure to admire the restored painting “Madonna and Child, also known as Notre-Dame de Recouvrance”.
