Site/monument

Collégiale Saint-Pierre

At the heart of the medieval city, the collegiate church built in the 12th century is one of the jewels of Poitou Roman. The bedside seduces the visitor with the harmonious layering of the volumes and the richness of the sculpted decoration.

It should be noted that the walls with curved tops which crown the apse and the radiating chapels are not domes but simple low walls which conceal the tiled roof. Inside, the elevation of the vaults gives the monument lightness and light. All the wealth is gathered in the choir. Its exceptional capitals illustrate various episodes in the life of the Virgin and Jesus in the midst of a profusion of animals and monsters. The author of these scenes, Gofridus, whose signature appears under the capital of the adoration of the Magi, demonstrates here a powerful verve and a naive expressiveness.
